Students will examine how the Renaissance perception of love gave way to an analysis of humankind and his/her place in the world.

Students will analyze the foundations of critical observation and social commentary in British literature and recognize how authors employ language as a tool to incite change.

 

 

REBELLION AGAINST LIMITATIONS

ROMANTICISM 1798-1832

Students will analyze the natural human tendency to rebel against rigid social confines and structure.

 

 

ORDER, DUTY, AND SOCIAL CHANGE

VICTORIANS 1832-1901

Students will analyze the fragile veneer of early Victorian society and the optimistic shift as a result of social change and technological advances.

 

THE APOCALYPTIC ANTI-HERO

MODERNISM 1901-1965

Students will examine how the sense  of disheartenment as a result of war and a technological world impacted literature.
